FAQ Hair Restoration

What is hair PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma which is a treatment that doctors use to accelerate healing in various areas of the body. Although PRP is a relatively new approach, there is scientific evidence to suggest that it can promote hair growth. Platelets are a component of blood, along with red and white blood cells. When a person sustains a cut or a wound, the platelets are some of the body’s first responders that arrive to stop the bleeding and promote healing. Researchers theorized that if they could extract concentrated platelets and inject them into damaged areas of the body, they could accelerate healing.  PRP contains a range of growth factors and proeins that speed tissue repair. As some types of hair loss results from damage to hair follicles, researchers hypothesized that PRP could help regrow hair by reversing the process that occurs in androgenetic alopecia.

Is PRP hair restoration permanent?

Hair restoration with PRP is not a permanent solution to all forms of hair loss, but it is a long-lasting one. You can easily maintain your results with follow-ups once annually after your initial series of treatments. All patients are unique, however, so you may need more or fewer treatments to maintain your ideal level of rejuvenation. Consult with your hair restoration specialist to plan the ideal hair care routine based on your needs.

How much does PRP hair restoration cost?

When it comes to treatment of hair loss, PRP procedure cost varies depending on how many treatments you may need. The average cost of one treatment is between 1,000-1500$. Here at Elixir one treatment costs 800$ and a package of four treatments costs 3,000$. The more dramatic your hair loss potential is, the more procedures necessary for full coverage.

Does PRP hair restoration hurt?

Depending on your tolerance levels, you’ll learn that some amount of soreness, tenderness and pain is normal. To help lessen the pain from the injections, your hair restoration specialist will use a topical anesthetic that helps numb the area under treatment. Later, you can take warm showers and use ice packs to ease the soreness that typically lasts 2 to 3 days.

When will PRP hair restoration start working?

PRP hair restoration produces noticeable results after just four to six weeks. However, it may be approximately 3.5 months before you see the results you were looking for. Due to the hair growth cycle, ideal results can take up to three sessions spaced one month apart to become apparent.

How does PRP hair restoration work?

Put simply, when you inject platelet-rich plasma into the scalp, the stem cells in your hair root are awoken. PRP therapy results in hair restoration by stimulating the growth of new hair from previously dormant follicles, strengthening and thickening your existing hairs. When the volume of your hairs is increased, they take up more surface area, covering more of your scalp. If your hair loss is caused by a localized injury, injected platelets migrate to the site of the injury and stop any bleeding. Moreover, they release granules of growth factors that eliminate inflammation and heal the injured area.

Alternative to PRP hair restoration.

The male scalp solution cream we carry here at Elixir Aesthetics contains four main ingredients, azelaic acid, progesterone, testosterone and liothyronine. The main ingredient azelaic acid’s role is being an inhibitor of 5a-reductase activity. This is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction which transforms testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The androgen DHT is five times as potent as testosterone and plays an important role in the development of men’s sexual characteristics, including the development of hair. However, DTH is actually detrimental to the growth of hair on the scalp, playing a key role in male pattern baldness. Thus inhibiting the ability to create DTH is of great importance to dermatologists specializing in hair regrowth. Progesterone I is also an enzyme that prevents the conversion to DHT.
