Q: What causes my hair loss?
A: Hair loss, or alopecia, commonly affects the scalp and can be temporary or permanent. Sometimes it’s the result of heredity, a hormonal change, a medical condition, or just a normal part of aging. Actually, people normally lose 50 to 100 hairs every day, but new hair is usually growing at the same time. Hair loss occurs when new hair doesn’t replace the lost hair.
Typically, hair loss is related to a factor like:
- Heredity – This is family history. The most common cause of hair loss tends to be a hereditary condition that occurs with aging
- Certain medications – Hair loss may be a side effect of a drug used to treat cancer, depression, arthritis, a heart problem, gout, or high blood pressure
- Hormonal changes – Such as hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or a thyroid issue
- Medical conditions – An example is alopecia areata which is immune-system-related
- Stressful events – Like a physical or emotional shock
- Excessive hairstyling or certain styles
- Certain hair treatments and permanents
- Radiation therapy
Poor nutrition, age, significant weight loss, diabetes, stress, and a family history of balding may be factors too.
Q: What is hair restoration?
A: When hair loss is permanent, this can be a real problem for a person who might then seek out treatment. One of the treatments available today is hair restoration therapy. This treatment uses a patient’s own blood and certain components of this blood to help with hair regrowth!
With hair restoration therapy, a professional draws a sample of blood from the patient, puts the sample in a centrifuge, separates the needed components from the blood, and then injects these components into the patient’s scalp. The procedure is only minimally invasive. After the procedure, the injected components may stimulate healing in the area and help heal the hair follicles there. As a result, hair may start to regrow, and in some cases, this may lead to a healthy head of hair!
Q: Is a hair restoration procedure permanent?
A: Results vary, depending on the patient, but many patients experience significant results. Often, a patient will need several treatments or repeated therapy sessions over the course of a year for the best results, but other times, a patient will see results very soon. Hair restoration isn’t necessarily permanent, but it’s typically long lasting, and you can maintain your results with annual follow-ups.
